The best-selling car on earth.

Overview

Model Y is the Model 3 recipe lifted into an SUV — 76 cubic feet of cargo, a glass roof, and enough volume to become the best-selling car of any kind in the world in 2023, the first electric car ever to hold that title.

The story

Model Y was unveiled in March 2019 as the cheaper, taller half of the Model 3/Model Y pair, sharing roughly three quarters of its parts with the sedan. It started deliveries in March 2020, exactly as the world shut down, and then did something no electric car had done before.

In 2023 it outsold every other car on the planet — petrol, diesel or electric — with around 1.2 million deliveries, taking the global crown from the Toyota Corolla. In Europe it was the best-selling vehicle of 2023 and 2024, and it is built on four continents.

The 2025 Juniper update replaced most of what you could see, and the line has since grown a long-wheelbase six-seat version, the Model Y L. It is the car Tesla's second Master Plan predicted and the one that pays for everything else.
